Wetting Agent is a specialized surfactant designed to preferentially oil-wet solids in oil-based mud systems. This powerful additive complements the system's normal wetting agents to assist in preventing water-wetting of solids, which can cause severe rheological problems, excessive viscosity, and filtration control issues. In certain situations, our additive has the unique ability to reverse water-wetting of solids that might occur due to contamination or improper treatment. Why Wetting Agents are Critical in OBM: In oil-based drilling fluids, it is essential that all solid particles — including barite (weighting material), drill solids, and lost circulation materials — are preferentially wetted by the continuous oil phase rather than by water. Water-wetting of solids can lead to severe problems including:

Excessive Viscosity & Gelation – Water-wet solids agglomerate, causing uncontrollable viscosity increases.
Poor Filtration Control – Water-wet solids do not form an effective filter cake.
Barite Sag – Improperly wetted barite settles rapidly, causing density variations.

How Our Wetting Agent Works: The wetting agent molecules contain both oil-loving (lipophilic) and water-loving (hydrophilic) components. When added to the oil-based mud, the molecules adsorb onto the surface of solid particles, presenting an oil-loving outer layer. This makes the solid particles preferentially attracted to the oil phase rather than to water. The result is a stable, well-dispersed suspension with optimal rheological properties, effective filtration control, and excellent lubricity.
