One of the primary functions of a drilling fluid is to carry drilled solids from the wellbore. These solids are contaminants, and if left in the system, can lead to numerous operational problems including excessive equipment wear, reduced penetration rates, and formation damage. The Sand Content Kit determines the volume percent of sand-sized particles (larger than 74 µm) in the drilling fluid. The kit consists of a glass tube graduated to read percent (%) by volume, a funnel, and a 200-mesh sieve contained in a cylindrical-shaped holder.

The Sand Content Kit is a simple, accurate, and inexpensive sieve analysis apparatus specifically designed for determining the sand content of drilling muds. Sieve analysis is the preferred method for sand content determination because of the reliability of the test and the simplicity of the equipment. The volume of sand, including the void spaces between individual grains, is typically measured and expressed as a percentage by volume of the drilling fluid sample.

Kit Components: The sand content kit consists of a special 200-mesh sieve (0.08 mm mesh size) fastened inside a collar, upon which a small funnel is fitted on either end. This assembly is used with a 10 ml glass measuring tube, graduated to read from 0 to 20% — the percentage of sand by volume. The collar and funnel are made of durable polyethylene, while the screen is constructed from corrosion-resistant brass. A 500ml wash bottle and carrying case are also included for complete portability and convenience.

Why Sand Content Testing is Critical: Excessive sand content in drilling fluids can cause several serious problems. It may result in the deposition of a thick, permeable filter cake on the wall of the hole, leading to differential sticking and formation damage. Sand particles may also settle in the hole around the drill tools when circulation is stopped, interfering with the successful operation of drilling tools or the setting of casings. High sand content also causes excessive abrasion of pump parts, drill pipes, connections, and downhole equipment, leading to increased maintenance costs and equipment failures.

Test Procedure: The sand content test is straightforward and quick. A mark on the measuring tube indicates the amount of drilling fluid to be filled. The fluid sample is poured through the 200-mesh sieve, allowing the liquid and smaller particles to pass through while retaining sand-sized particles. The retained sand is then washed using the wash bottle, and the remaining sand is transferred to the graduated measuring tube. The percentage of sand can be read directly from the tube's 0-20% graduation scale, providing an immediate, reliable measurement of sand content.

Recommended Sand Content Limits: For optimal drilling performance, sand content in drilling fluids should typically be maintained below 1% for most operations. Higher levels may indicate insufficient solids control equipment performance, such as shakers, desanders, or desilters, and may require corrective action to prevent equipment damage and operational problems.
